Keeping up with tire technology the key to success at Dettmer Tire

The Family-owned company celebrates 42 years serving Guelph and area

Advances in tire technology have paralleled automobile innovations at every turn over the past century.

One company that has watched the ongoing evolution of tire technology with a vested interest is Dettmer Tire and Auto in downtown Guelph, which this October is celebrating its 42nd anniversary of operation.

Opened and operated locally by the Adams family since 1978, Dettmer Tire has grown to encompass three generations, two locations and one wholesale division. Through more than four decades of serving the people of Guelph, Dettmer Tire has seen a lot of changes in the automotive industry, especially in the development of tire technology.

“When we first opened there was a car size, a truck size and an oversize tire choice,” said Josh Adams, office manager at Dettmer Tire. “Now a new Honda comes with four different tire sizes, so it’s important to be educated on the products available.”

The expansion of product lines being offered by the major tire producers has resulted in both pros and cons for tire retailers like Dettmer Tire according to Adams.

“With all the choices and varieties available you can definitely pair someone with a much better tire option than you could before,” said Adams, whose grandfather, Bill  bought the company after years of working at the Dominion rubber plant. “On the other hand, there are a lot more options to pick the wrong tire for your vehicle. That’s why it’s important for staff to know their products.”

While recognized in Guelph for their expertise with tires, Dettmer has also established a reputation as a top auto repair and service shop in Guelph.  Adams attributes that fact to a combination of factors that have remained consistent through the entire history of the company.

“We’ve always tried to have the most competitive price while offering a small-town style of service,” said Adams. “We try to offer big box store prices with a small shop feel while offering exceptional customer relations. We do get a lot of repeat customers who buy tires based solely on price, but many of them come back for repairs on their vehicles because of the service they get.”

As they celebrate their 42nd anniversary, Adams wants customers to know they appreciate their business and loyalty, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. With winter tire installation season just around the corner, Adams suggests drivers avoid delaying and visit their location before it’s too late.

“Normally our winter rush starts November 1st. With COVID, I recommend getting it done in October. All of the tire rebates start in October, so if you’re buying new tires rebates would apply.  It’s cool enough so it’s fine to put them on in October.”
