Monthly Musical Member Video - Silas Chinsen

Silas Chinsen is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and choir director based in Guelph.
MONTHLY MUSICAL MEMBER

Guelph Arts Council is grateful to have the opportunity to run our Guelph Emerging Artist Mentorship Program that pairs emerging artists and arts professionals with established mentors. Today’s video is from one of the participants of the most recent edition of that program which took place in the fall of 2020. Silas Chinsen’s contribution to that program and its culminating exhibition revealed an artist with a deep understanding, skill, and love of music, but also the ability to transfer all of that into a beautiful collaborative effort. The video for “When You’re Away” sort of breaks the fourth wall, but doesn’t reveal the entire mystery behind how Silas uses multiple instruments, vocal effects and a loop pedal to create a soundscape with a very contemporary feel.

Silas Chinsen

Silas Chinsen is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and choir director based in Guelph. He has an extensive background in classical and contemporary music, with experience performing and teaching classical, rock, pop, folk, jazz, and a capella. Silas completed his Masters and Bachelors of Music at the University of Ottawa, graduating summa cum laude. He studied guitar with Patrick Roux and voice with Dillon Parmer. He was twice the recipient of the Ed Honeywell scholarship for classical guitar, and performed the role of Dr. Bartolo in uOttawa's 2018 production of Le Nozze di Figaro. In 2020 Silas won the Ottawa Guitar Society's "Call for Scores" composition competition with his piece "Different Expectations", and premiered the work at the 2020 Guitar Alla Grande Festival.

Silas Chinsen’s website includes more information about this wonderful Guelph musician, including how one might learn any number of instruments from him (in either English or French, conveniently!). There are also a variety of videos available to watch which range from cover songs with heavy vocal effects to classical guitar pieces to electric guitar shredding, so there’s really something for everyone. This is where we usually plug Bandcamp Fridays, but it seems that offer has now ended after over a year. Regardless, Bandcamp is still a fantastic way to support your favourite artists, so please consider that site for your downloading needs.

And now, the “how-is-there-so-much-going-on-with-only-one-person-on-the-screen” video for Silas Chinsen’s “When You’re Away”.
