WELLINGTON COUNTY – Another rural broadband project is breaking ground in Wellington County.

Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) announced Thursday construction of an infrastructure network in Eden Mills to service more than 280 homes is underway with service expected starting in August.

The project is valued at almost $1 million with the federal and provincial government contributing $267,000 of that.

“I am proud of the work our government has done, in collaboration with the Province of Ontario, Western Ontario Warden’s Caucus and SWIFT, to work toward our goal of ensuring all Canadian homes and businesses across Canada are connected and have access to high-speed internet,” said MP Lloyd Longfield in a press release.

To date, more than 3,000 households and businesses in Southwestern Ontario have received access to improved broadband through SWIFT.

“SWIFT continues to move forward with its broadband expansion plans in Wellington County and across Southwestern Ontario,” said Gary McNamara, SWIFT board chair, in a press release. “Today’s announcement is yet another important step in the right direction to ensuring equitable access to high-speed internet services throughout our region.”

The provincial release says efforts are continuing to bridge gaps in broadband access in rural Ontario as part of a combined federal and provincial investment of nearly $200 million to benefit these communities.

Work has already been underway on two separate projects bringing over 1,700 homes and businesses in rural Centre Wellington and 270 in Wellington North onto a fibre-optic network.
