PUSLINCH - A new medical centre with a pharmacy and space for up to four family doctors is planned for Morriston.

Husband and wife team, Dr. Manu Kaushik and Dr. Pooja Kaushik presented Puslinch council with their vision for the facility, dubbed the Morriston Medical Centre at Wednesday’s council meeting.

“I’ve grown up in Morriston, I’ve lived in Morriston for almost 20 years and I’ve always felt that there was a lack of medical facilities in our village,” Dr. Manu Kaushik told the meeting. “My goal for myself was not just to become a physician, but I always wanted to serve my community in some way and I’ve been quite fortunate that Pooja also shares this vision.”

The Kaushiks currently practice medicine in south Guelph, but as Dr. Pooja Kaushik explained, their patients come from communities all around the city. She said their existing patients would join them at the planned medical centre, along with patients from Morriston and surrounding area.

The facility will be located on the currently vacant land at the corner of Telfer Glenn Street and Highway 6.

“I admire your vision and I agree that having a local medical facility would be a wonderful addition to our community,” Coun. Jessica Goyta told the doctors.

Council also heard from a resident who worried the new medical centre would increase traffic at an already problematic intersection of Highway 6 and Telfer Glen Street.

In an effort to improve road safety, council voted to ask the Ministry of Transportation to review the road design at the intersection and examine the possibility of paving the shoulder. It will also ask the ministry to reconsider the decision not to install traffic lights at the location.

Council unanimously approved the site plan agreement for the new medical centre.
