PALMERSTON – A $1.8 million investment from the government means the Town of Minto will be going ahead with major improvements at one of its recreation centres.

The town announced in a press release they were successful in getting just under $1 million in federal funding and around $800,000 from the province for renovations at the Palmerston & District Community Centre.

This was announced along with 30 other community and recreation projects in central Ontario as part of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), a cost sharing fund between three levels of government.

“Today’s investment will provide the community with a recreation complex that will meet the needs of the next generation,” said Perth-Wellington MP John Nater in a press release. “Residents in Palmerston and the entire Town of Minto can be proud to live in a community that looks to the future. Thank you to mayor Bridge and Minto council for championing this project.”

Upgrades highlighted in the press release include renovating and constructing new arena dressing rooms, lighting upgrades for one baseball diamond and creating a third baseball diamond.

Ron Elliott, Minto parks and recreation advisory committee chair and councillor, expressed his gratitude to all involved in making this funding a reality.

“This is going to be a great project for the community, allowing for a safer, more modern and spacious facility that can accommodate minor sports, tournaments and community events for years to come,” Elliott said in a press release.

Mayor George Bridge said in a statement this funding means a lot for the community.

“These enhancements will help shape and secure future recreational opportunities for our residents,” Bridge said. “I personally want to thank MP John Nater and MPP Randy Pettapiece for advocating for this project.”

The estimated cost of the project is $2.4 million with the Town of Minto funding the remaining costs.
