WELLINGTON COUNTY – The County of Wellington has begun delivering green bin kits ahead of the planned summer start of their organics curbside collection.

All houses that receive curbside waste collection by the county will have weekly green bin collection starting the week of July 7.

Residents can expect a green bin package delivered in May or June which includes the large curbside bin and a smaller one intended to be used in the kitchen. This delivery comes at no charge and extra bins can be bought for $20 after the launch of the program.

Recycling and organics will be collected weekly but user-pay garbage bags will continue to be bi-weekly. For health and safety reasons and efficiency, no substitute bins can be used for organics.

According to the county website, acceptable items for the green bin include:

  • Fruits, vegetables (raw or cooked)
  • Meat, poultry, fish products (including bones)
  • Pasta, bread, cereals, rice
  • Dairy products, eggs and shells
  • Coffee grounds, filters, tea bags
  • Nuts and shells
  • Herbs, spices, sauces
  • Fat, grease, lard (small quantities, solidified, no liquids
  • Muffin liners, butcher, wax, and parchment papers
  • Paper plates, napkins, towels (not soiled with cleaning products)

  • Animal bedding (no droppings or cat litter)

The county website to keep plastic bags, human and pet waste, paper cups, grass clippings, diapers, wipes and sanitary products out of the green bin.

It is recommended but not required to line both green bins with paper products or a compostable liner bag with the Biodegradable Products Institute logo. Bins can not be lined with plastic and will not be picked up.

To reduce odours and deter pests, it is recommended to regularly rinse both green bins and to keep the outdoor bin latched at all times.
