Local entrepreneur Jakki Prince turned her love of baking into a mobile and thriving business.

“A lot of people love baking but not everyone gets to do it for a living,” said Prince. “I really feel blessed.”

Prince earned a degree in environmental science at the University of Guelph with plans of becoming a professor and ecologist. She learned to bake helping her grandmother in the kitchen and continued with the hobby all through college.

By October 2010, demand for her baked goods had grown enough to launch Sweet Temptations Cupcakery.

“I started baking for friends and colleagues for birthday parties and other events,” said Prince. “I applied for a vendor’s permit at the new Aberfoyle Farmers’ Market that was opening in May 2011.”

Word of her popular cupcakes and cakes soon spread and before long she had booths at the Guelph Farmers’ Market and the Preston Farmers’ Market.

She became known for providing a wide variety of cupcakes including vegan options and recipes for people with food allergies.

In January 2014 she opened her storefront and bakery on Gordon Street and a year later became a pioneer of the local food truck community.

“We were doing so many mobile events I decided to get a food truck,” said Prince.

She joined other local businesses to advocate for changes in the city bylaws and in August 2015 food trucks were approved for operation in Guelph.

The Sweet Temptations Sprinkles food truck has since become a familiar part of many community festivals and corporate events.

“The business just keeps growing,” said Prince. “This has been our best year so far.”
