A 27-year-old Guelph man has died as a result of injuries sustained during a Friday morning fire, police confirm.

“The fire is not considered suspicious and the cause is believed to be accidental,” Guelph police spokesperson Scott Tracey said via email.

The fire was reported shortly after 11:30 a.m. Friday at the former Holiday Inn Express on Silvercreek Parkway, just north of Woodlawn Road.

Five fire trucks responded to the fire call, which was contained to a single second-floor unit filled with smoke. Traffic flow in the area was briefly shut down during the emergency response.

The man died Sunday morning.
