St. George’s Anglican Church will celebrate St. George’s Day with a special concert of carillon music beginning at noon on Sunday, April 21.

The concert will be performed by carillonneur Deborah Hennig of Stratford.

Hennig is a graduate of the prestigious Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium, and has performed several carillon concerts in Europe and North America.

She is a regular player of the beautiful 36-bell carillon at St. George’s.

The feast day of St. George is traditionally celebrated on April 23, the day he died in the year 303 AD.

St. George is the patron saint of England and was immortalized in the legend of St. George and the Dragon, which tells of his slaying a dragon that was terrorizing villagers.

The 20-minute carillon program features music specific to the occasion including favourite hymns “Jerusalem”, “Thaxted” and “On Eagle’s Wings”, Welsh folk melody “The Ash Grove”, and nods to the legend of St. George with “Puff, The Magic Dragon” and “Test Drive” from How to Train your Dragon.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The bells can be heard best from the area immediately surrounding the church.

Douglas Street and the Courthouse parking lot offer good listening areas and audience members are encouraged to bring a folding seat for the concert.

The Cutten Memorial Carillon at St. George’s was originally a 23-bell instrument, installed in 1926 by the British bell foundry Gillett & Johnston.

In 2006, it was refurbished and expanded by U.S. bell founders Meeks, Watson to 36 bells and is a rare gem among carillons in Canada.
