NEWS RELEASE
GUELPH POLICE SERVICE
*******************************
On Sept. 21, 2020 at 8:25 a.m., a red Dodge Ram truck was observed parked in a no parking and no stopping area in a school zone located near the intersection of Imperial Road South and Paisley Road in the City of Guelph.

On Sept. 22 at 8:25 a.m., a member of the Guelph Police Service observed the same vehicle again parked in the same area. Police approached the vehicle and informed the adult male driver that he would be receiving a ticket, to which he replied “No, I won’t be!” He then started reversing his truck towards a crosswalk, with young school-aged children everywhere, pulled around the officer and sped off.

Approximately five minutes later, the truck returned to a nearby no parking and no stopping area, but again sped off before police could stop them.

On Sept. 23 at 8:30 a.m., a member of the Guelph Police Service Traffic unit observed the same vehicle again parked in the same no parking and no stopping area. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver was identified. He was issued a Provincial Offence Notice under the Highway Traffic Act in regards to the incident.

Further investigation revealed that this male has children who attend the nearby school and only lives a short distance away. The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to consider active transport (walking, biking, etc.) when taking their children to school whenever possible. An increase in active transport would help decrease traffic congestion in busy school zones during drop off and pick up times.

We would also like to remind the public the importance of obeying all posted signs, especially in school zones, and again encourage all drivers to be extra vigilant in these areas.

Thank you to the large number of community members who submitted tips to the Guelph Police Service in regards to this incident. Your support is very much appreciated and helped bring this incident to a resolution.
