Guelph Police responded to 365 calls for service

The following news release was issued today by the Guelph Police Service:

Missing male with Alzheimer’s and dementia located
On March 1, at 2:18 p.m., a 76 year old male with Alheimer’s and Dementia wandered off from his residence located near the intersection of Marilyn Drive and Woolwich Street in the City of Guelph.

The male is a part of Project Lifesaver Guelph Wellington. Numerous officers were sent to the area and Project Lifesaver equipment was utilized. Officers soon located a signal for the male using the equipment and were approaching his location. However, prior to the equipment locating him, at 3:37 p.m., another officer found him in the commercial plaza located near the intersection of Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue West.

The male did not require medical treatment and was returned to his family.

Project Lifesaver Guelph Wellington assists caregivers and responds to the challenges of keeping loved ones safe when they wander due to Alzheimer's, Autism or other forms of cognitive impairment.

Participants wear a battery-operated bracelet that sends an FM radio signal 24 hours a day. It even works in areas such as buildings and forests.

Volunteers from Victim Services Wellington visit each client once a month to change the battery.

When a caregiver tells their local police service that a client has gone missing, trained police officers will use Project Lifesaver equipment to search for and locate the missing person.

  • Project Lifesaver has a 100% find rate.

Project Lifesaver does not replace the position of a caregiver, but it is a tool that can save lives and reduce stress felt by family members.

There is a startup fee to join the program as well as a monthly cost to maintain the equipment.

Males arrested after search warrant
In late February 2020, a residence located near the intersection of Fife Road and Gateway Drive in the City of Guelph was entered and a number of tools were stolen. 

On March 1st, 2020, police discovered a person of interest who was in possession of some of the stolen items.  As a result of police investigation, a search warrant was issued and executed at a residence located near the intersection of Fife Road and Wellington Street West.

The search revealed approximately $1,000 worth of stolen tools and 0.5 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine. An adult male was subsequently arrested.

A 28 year old Guelph male has been charged with:

  • Possession Of Stolen Property
  • Trafficking In Stolen Property
  • Possession Of A Controlled Substance (Crystal Methamphetamine)
  • Breach Probation

He will appear in court on April 17.
