Guelph Police are reporting that a second city resident has fallen for a Bitcoin scam.

On Tuesday at 2:35 p.m., a woman received a phone call from a man posing as a police officer. He advised her that she owed money to multiple different people, including the Canada Revenue Agency, and that she also needed a new social insurance number. He instructed her to withdraw $2,920 from her bank account and deposit it into a Bitcoin machine at a business located near the intersection of Gordon Street and Wellington Street East.

The female followed the instructions, and then reported the incident to the Guelph Police Service at 6 p.m. after realizing it was likely a scam.

A similar sequence of events happened to a Guelph teen on Monday.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Constable Shannon Carroll at 519-824-1212 ext. 7357, email her at [email protected], leave an anonymous tip at CRIME STOPPERS 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

The Guelph Police Service would like to remind that public that no police officer will ever instruct you to deposit money into a Bitcoin machine.
