GuelphToday received the following letter in response to a recent article about Mayor Cam Guthrie's decision to invoke strong mayor powers.
Some time ago I said in public that if ever an elected official in our community adopted the highly anti-democratic “strong mayor’s” powers I would in all good conscience vigorously oppose it. I am now doing just that.
On the very slim, untenable and immoral premise that “the end justifies the means” Mayor Guthrie is not only insulting his Council colleagues and Guelph residents who subscribe to the basics of democracy, but he has fallen into the unethical swamp that has been the foundations of the disgraced Ford government.
No Guelph resident with a modicum of moral backbone would rear their children under such unprincipled values.
The Mayor’s decision is in its barren foundations totally unacceptable.
