An Elmvale man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder following the disappearance of two men almost three decades ago.

Michael Guido Gerald Claes, 49, has been charged and was remanded into custody on Monday.

More details to come as Barrie police and Ontario Provincial Police are holding a news conference at Barrie police headquarters, Wednesday.

Grant Ayerst, a 21-year-old Barrie man, and Norman Whalley, a 36-year-old man from British Columbia, were last seen leaving a Toronto hotel on Sept. 11, 1991.

According to police, it is strongly suspected the two men met with foul play in Barrie.

Their remains have yet to be recovered.

Since 2017, four investigations involving five victims who met with foul play in or near the City of Barrie have been profiled online though Simcoe County Case Files.
