A. POSITION TITLE: Registered Nurse / Registered Practical Nurse, Part Time/Casual
B. REPORTS TO: Physician Group & Office Manager
C. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Registered Nurse / Registered Practical Nurse is a member of an inter-disciplinary team responsible for achieving
the primary care functions at Baker Street Medical Group. The Registered Nurse / Registered Practical Nurse provides a
high level of comprehensive care to meet the physical, emotional, and social needs of the patient, under the direction and
supervision of the Baker Street Medical Physicians.
D. QUALIFICATIONS:
The minimum qualifications of the Registered Nurse / Registered Practical Nurse are:
Educational Requirements and Professional Certifications:
• Degree or diploma in Nursing from an accredited educational institution
• Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Evidence of liability insurance.
Experience, Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
• Two or three years related or applicable experience in a community, hospital or primary health care
setting;
• Proven leadership, organization, time management, communication and critical thinking skills
• Excellence in problem-solving and conflict resolution
• Multi-tasking skills related to the delivery of efficient primary care
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with colleagues and patients
• Proficiency in the use of computers (hardware & software) and maintain competence in current
technologies
• Experience with electronic medical record systems –TELUS PSS an asset.
• Demonstrates the ability to work independently or in a team environment in a positive light while
meeting the needs of patients
• Exhibits the ability to be open and non-judgmental
E. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
The key responsibilities of the RN/RPN are as follows:
Patient Care and Treatment:
• Maintain the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario;
• Maintain complete and accurate medical records (including concise documentation of all patient
encounters, telephone and office encounters, conveying results) all within a timely fashion;
• Answer patient inquiries in order to direct them to the appropriate treatment as directed by the
physician;
• Working knowledge of the Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule of Ontario
• Ability to work with populations across the life span.
• Utilize the Nursing Process to assess, plan, implement and evaluation patient care in consultation with
the physician, on an ongoing basis.
• Assist the primary care team and perform clinical tasks by conducting nursing assessments, history
taking and, performing specific procedures according to the College of Nurses of Ontario standards of
nursing practice.
• Review lab results and forward reports requiring attention to the physician;

• Ability to organize a wide range of responsibilities and set priorities to complete tasks in a timely
fashion;
• Ability to recognize problems or concerns and address issues in a timely and positive fashion with the
appropriate team members;
• Perform duties in an ethical manner and maintain confidentially in all matters.
• Ability to acknowledge limitations in knowledge, judgment and skills and function within those
limitations
Communication:
• Triage patient telephone calls and questions using problem-solving and critical thinking skills within the
scope of practice.
• Listen and respond appropriately when interacting with patients and their families
• Sharing nursing knowledge with patients and other team members regarding health promotion and
illness prevention.
• Liaise with community agencies as required.
• Demonstrate an openness to accept changes that support quality of care.
Procedures:
• Complete initial assessment of patient at each visit in order to identity health needs, including but not
limited to blood pressure readings, vision test, height/weight, or other such information that is
pertinent to the presenting issue;
• Administer medications and treatments prescribed by the physician or according to protocols; this may
include immunizations, injections, dressing changes, ear syringing, suture removal, etc.).
• Utilize universal infection control practices to maintain a safe and clean work environment;
• Handle and dispose of hazardous and infectious wastes properly according to infection control
guidelines;
• Sterilize all medical equipment as required;
• Maintain exam room set up and ensure supplies are well stocked;
• Other tasks as required.
Education and Leadership:
• Balance team and individual responsibilities in order to contribute to the ongoing development of a
positive team spirit and team excellence;
• Be prepared to contribute to problem solving in a positive manner;
• Be prepared to accept additional duties and responsibilities in a positive light;
• Monitor own work to ensure quality of care is maintained;
• Attend professional development workshops and seminars when available.
Employment Conditions:
• Valid Ontario Driver’s License and/or reliable transportation;
• Police reference check for the Vulnerable Sector
• Applicable immunizations
• CPR / HCP
