Good food, music, fun, and all in the name of saving food from going to waste.

The Centre Wellington Mobile Market is holding what it is calling the Food Rescue Picnic in Belwood on Saturday, Oct. 14.

It's being held at The Skol House at 24 North Broadway St.

Food rescued from food distribution companies around Centre Wellington will be provided to food vendors, and will re-purpose it to use in their meals.

"We want to bring something to our community that hasn't been done before," Short said, noting the sliding scale tickets for sale.

She said no matter your financial means, you will be allowed into the event.

Tickets are available on a sliding scale. You can either get a free ticket, a $30 ticket for general entry or a $60 ticket for yourself and sponsoring someone else who may not be able to afford entry.

"I think we've all felt the rising pressure with inflation, and some of us more than others," Short said.

"The amount of food that's going into our landfills is mind boggling. When you see what we get in, we have these beautiful pieces of pork tenderloin that are not past the best before date, and just for some reason, the grocery stores can't sell it. We get all these ingredients on a weekly basis that are just beautiful, and they can be used and repurposed."

She said there's so much struggle in the community, and there's no reason for it.

"When you have this food that's going into the landfill, it's like why can't we put this into people's fridges and pantries, and on their table so that everyone can eat a nutritious meal."

Co-organizer Sue McPhedran said the Centre Wellington Food Bank will also be on scene, promoting what it does and to provide ice cream.

It's just one of the many community partners coming together, which helps because as McPhedran points out, the mobile market doesn't have charitable status so the support is appreciated.

"We've had remarkable support from service clubs, especially the Belwood Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Fergus Elora," she said. "A local business here, Garafraxa Turf Incorporated has given us a nice cash donation, and several individuals have supported us."

The event will feature music performances, family activities, and fresh baked pies and jam for sale using rescued food.

Harmony Meadows Alpaca farm will be on site to teach people about sustainable farming and farming with animals in a conscious way.

A free and accessible shuttle bus will also be available, but final pick up locations haven't been finalized.

The event runs from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
