A soon-to-be Guelphite is turning her love of baking into the city's newest donut shop.
Fluffy Glaze will open its doors sometime in September in the Scottsdale Centre strip mall at 650 Scottsdale Dr.
"I actually have been baking my entire life," said co-owner Sharon Bhatia. "I've always had a passion for cookies, brownies, all that stuff."
A passion so strong, Bhatia is leaving her full-time nursing job in Brampton, and will move to Guelph with her partner to run a business selling something "nobody can say no to."
"What's better than doing something that's your passion," she said.
The shop will allow for customers to place an order, and check out the donuts being made from scratch through a viewing window, from the frying and flipping stage, to the station where the various toppings are being added.
Bhatia said it's her own recipe, and donuts will be made fresh around the clock.
"We'll be making the dough either by hand, or we'll have a mixer for that," she said.
"It'll go through a machine, which will obviously let the donuts release. They'll proof through the machine, and then be fried and glazed all from the machine."
She said it's been about a two-year process, from taking extra baking classes to brush up on her skills, to finding the right community to establish themselves.
Finding the space on Scottsdale was meant to be, she said, noting the welcoming atmosphere from not only nearby residents, but also the building's landlord factored into the decision.
"We've always looked at Guelph as a city that's growing," Bhatia said. "We see that there's a lot of support here, in terms of the community and we love the area."
