LETTER: Stores should cut the cost on stuff we really need

'What people really need right now are big sales on bread, milk, eggs, baby formula, diapers, beef, chicken, vegetables, fruit ...' writes reader Elaine McCartney.

GuelphToday received the following letter about the high cost of groceries.

Dear Big Box Stores and Grocery Stores,

Black Friday is approaching, and you're all sending out flyers advertising your big sales.

Did it ever occur to you that the public, your customers, have enough TVs, air fryers, inflatable lawn Santas, and all the other "stuff" that you're trying to clear out of your inventories?

What people really need right now are big sales on bread, milk, eggs, baby formula, diapers, beef, chicken, vegetables, fruit, and all the other groceries that are becoming increasingly unaffordable. These are items that keep bodies and souls together; these are items that most people can actually use.

Food bank use in Guelph is skyrocketing, as it is throughout Ontario. People are suffering, and children are going hungry due to price increases for food and housing.

Perhaps it's time for retailers to read the room and reduce your prices for the items your customers actually want and need.
