NEWS RELEASE

OAK TREE PROJECT

The 2017 Oak Tree Project has come to a close after another successful finale event hosted at the Art Gallery of Guelph. The event was attended by over 180 people and this year raised $35,000 for Guelph/Wellington charities.

Since its inception in 2014, The Oak Tree Project has given away over $110,000. The 2017 Oak Tree Project invited Guelph and Wellington charities to share how they would use $5,000 to help create a sense of belonging in their community. This theme was chosen with input from last year’s judges and as a way to celebrate Canada’s 150th.

The 2017 winners are:

Grand Prize (winning $5,000)

  • Shelldale Better Beginnings Better Futures (@BBBFGuelph) for their programs that support newcomers to their community.

The 4 Finalists (each receiving between $1,000 - $3,000)

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph | @BBBSofGuelph
  • Children Foundation of GW | @ChildrensFdnGW
  • Focus on Nature | @focusonnatureca
  • Guelph Neighborhood Support Coalition | @GuelphNSC

Judge’s Prize (winning $2,500)

  • Guelph Black Heritage Society

The Picton Mahoney People’s Choice (winning $1,000)

  • Shelldale Better Beginnings Better Futures (@BBBFGuelph)

All 20 participating charities will share the rest of the money raised from the event’s guests, sponsors and supporters.

The Oak Tree Project was established in 2014 by The Mactaggart Family to empower Guelph/Wellington charities with funds and to tell stories about their impacts. Offering a new approach to corporate social responsibility, The Oak Tree Project demonstrates how philanthropy is changing by engaging communities and strengthening local nonprofits.
