WELLINGTON COUNTY – Two Wellington County post offices have been used as sample properties that the federal government could leverage to build housing in the future.

In the More Affordable Homes chapter of the 2024 federal budget, the post offices in Rockwood and Erin are among nine Ontario sites those used as examples of “sample Canada Post properties that could be unlocked for housing.”

“Canada Post manages a large portfolio of land, including more than 1,700 post offices, in over 1,700 communities across the country,” the budget states.

“Many of these sites often house one-storey Canada Post buildings, which could be leveraged to build new homes across the country, while maintaining Canada Post services.”

The Rockwood post office at 178 Guelph St. and Erin’s post office at 83 Main St. are both one-storey buildings.

“As part of its work to build homes on public lands, Budget 2024 announces that the government will take steps to prioritize leasing or divestment of post office properties and lands with high potential for housing, where doing so maintains high service standards for Canadians,” the budget says.

The budget also says the government intends to launch a new Canada Post Housing Program to support affordable housing providers to build on disposed or leased Canada Post properties. Details on that are said to be available later in the year.

Six Canada Post properties, not the two in Wellington County, are in the process of being assessed for housing development potential including three sites in Quebec, two in British Columbia and one in Alberta.
