Guelph Hydro is advising customers to beware of a new hydro scam using text messages to target victims. Referred to as “smishing,” these text message scams are used by cybercriminals to try to lure people into providing account information, passwords, or credit card information. Information is obtained either by answering questions via text message or telephone or on a website after tapping on a link in the text message.

Guelph Hydro customers have reported receiving text messages within the last 24 hours that read: “E-Transfer. Hydro-One sent you money” and that provide a link. Guelph Hydro does not use text messaging to communicate with customers. Customers are advised that if they get a suspicious looking text (or email) regarding their hydro service, to simply delete it.

Never reply or tap on any links in the message. Customers are reminded, if they receive a scam text, email or phone call:

• Never provide any personal information including Guelph Hydro, bank, or credit card account numbers or account balance

• Report the scam to local police

• Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre

Customers who have questions about their account should call Guelph Hydro customer service at 519-822-3010 during normal business hours or visit the Guelph Hydro website to access their account information using MyEnergy View.
