Guelph's new skate park should be open for business in June.

And Silvercreek Skatepark, located in Silvercreek Park beside the river on the southwest corner of the Edinburgh Road/Wellington Street intersection, will be on budget.

A mild early winter and some recent good weather have construction crews slightly ahead of schedule, said Adam Rutherford, recreation supervisor, programming and community development with the City of Guelph.

"Barring any unforeseen circumstances, it will definitely be open by the time school is out. We're looking at six to eight weeks," said Rutherford. "Because it was so mild in November and December they are way ahead of forecast."

Work crews began the final phase of the work on April 15 and will start pouring the park's concrete base in segments.

Rutherford said Gateman Milloy, the company building the park, have learned from experience building other parks that the final concrete needs to be poured in a particular process in order to avoid anxious skaters from hopping the fence and using the park before it's ready.

"We know there's a tonne of interest in the park and that people can't wait to start using it," Rutherford said.

The park has come in on budget: $905,510, which includes everything from landscaping, restoration of adjoining property to the completed park.

The city has not had a permanent, public skate park since 2007 when it closed the one in Deerpath Park in the west end due to concerns from neighbours.

The city has on several occasions subsidized access to the private indoor skate park The Ward as a concession since then.
