Cell phones and other devices throughout the province will be blaring this afternoon, but it’s not a real emergency. It’s a test of the Alert Ready system.

“Please don’t call 911 to let us know or, worse yet, complain about it,” Guelph police said in a social media post.

Alerts will be broadcast through television, radio and LTE-connected and compatible wireless devices at 12:55 p.m.

“The Alert Ready system was developed with many partners, including federal, provincial and territorial emergency management officials, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Pelmorex, the broadcasting industry and wireless service providers,” explains a post on the Alert Ready website. “Together, these partners work to ensure Canadians receive alerts immediately and know when to take action to stay safe.”

The test is being done to identify any potential pitfalls or needed enhancements of the system.
