Young Guelph fan shares her love for Panthers at Stanley Cup finals

Ashley Matthews, Grade 4 student at June Avenue Public School, cheers on Florida team

A young hockey fan from Guelph found herself being interviewed by news media in Florida on the weekend as she showed off her support for her beloved Florida Panthers.

Ashley Matthews, 9, is a Grade 4 student at June Avenue Public School.

"She is a huge Panthers fan," her dad, Mark, said in a message to GuelphToday, saying they were fortunate to get tickets at Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals on Saturday in Sunrise, Fla.

Dad said Ashley was interviewed by City-TV Edmonton and NBC News.

She was carrying a sign that read, "From Guelph, Ont. Here to see Tkachuk win the Cup!" with "heart" symbols for what would appear to be her favourite player, Matthew Tkachuk.

The Panthers would go on to take Game 1 with a 3-0 win over the visiting Edmonton Oilers, who were unable to get one past star Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky despite a strong game.

Game 2 is tonight at 8 p.m.
