Garton fuels hot start for Guelph Royals

Two games, two wins on the weekend

Josh Garton hit three homers and drove in two runs as the Guelph Royals started the season perfectly with a pair of weekend wins.

Saturday at home in front of roughly 450 fans the Royals opened their season with a 4-0 win over the London Majors. Sunday in Kitchener, Guelph cruised to a 27-6 win over the Kitchener Panthers.

Garton homered and drove in a pair of runs on Saturday. On Sunday he had a pair of homers, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs.

Saturday, the Royals held the Maple Leafs to just two hits, led by four hitless innings by starter Jacob Kush, who struck out eight. Rhys Montgomery got the win in relief and Brandon Deans the save.

Sunday's win in Kitchener saw Guelph total 21 hits, walk 10 times and were hit by pitches six times. Kitchener also made four errors.

JD Williams and Garrett Takamatsu also homered for Guelph, with Williams driving in seven runs on he day and Takamatsu six. Hector Yan got the win on the mound, giving up two earned runs over five innings of work.

Guelph was supposed to open the season Friday in Hamilton but that game was rained out.

Next game is Saturday when they host the London Majors in a 1 p.m. start at Hastings Stadium.
