Caravaggio, Catherine "Cathy"

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Cathy Caravaggio on April 3, 2023 at the Guelph General Hospital after battling cancer for more than a decade. She was born on May 1, 1955 in San Giorgio Morgeto, Italy and immigrated to Canada in 1967.

Loving wife to Alex for 40 wonderful years. Proud mother to John (Carolina) and Michelle (Roberto).

Treasured Nonna to Tullia, Luna and Henry. Cherished sister to Angela (late Giacomo), Michael (Doreen), Elena (Dominico), Mary (Dean), Armando (Rajinder), Lina (Mark), and sister-in-law to the late Lilliana (Giuseppe). A devoted daughter to her predeceased parents, Teresa and Guido Mammoliti. Cathy will be missed by all her nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, friends and colleagues. She loved us all.

Cathy took such joy in her family and was thrilled to become a nonna. She would take every opportunity to look after her grandkids and had to be reminded that they didn’t always need to be eating something. She was just getting to know her grandson Henry, but they would always make each other smile. Her home would be filled with friends and family, often hosting many large parties with an overabundance of delicious food, which she would happily send people home with. Her meatball soup will be greatly missed, especially by her granddaughter Luna who would ask for seconds.

When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she could be found tending to her cherished garden, often going out of her way to deliver her zucchini, tomatoes, and peppers to friends and family. But at 4:30pm, she would drop everything to watch scandal after scandal on The Young & the Restless.

Cathy was a devout Catholic who attended mass regularly at Sacred Heart Church and was delighted to be recently accompanied by her granddaughter Tullia. She prayed before she went anywhere, thanked God for arriving safely, and could be counted on her to end a sentence with “God willing.”

Lastly, she was especially sentimental, from her stories of Calabria, her encyclopedic memory of noteworthy dates, to her collection of newspaper clippings and knickknacks often accompanied by little summaries written in neat handwriting. She would have her glasses perched on her nose as she held her phone out to take a picture or narrate a video of something meaningful to her. She needed to catalogue and try to keep anything with the slightest importance, despite half-hearted opposition from her husband.

Cathy needed to remember, and likewise we will fondly remember her. Cathy was a special lady and we miss her.

Resting at Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon St. Guelph, where the family invites friends and relatives to join for a visitation on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
