CARTHEW, J. Robert 'Bob'

Posted

Peacefully in his sleep at Hospice Wellington, Guelph in the late hours of October 17, 2020 at the age of 83.   Husband of his cherished wife Linda Carthew (nee Wiley), Dad to Dave, Jennifer (Gerry), stepdad to Mark (Nancy), Laura (Michael) and Andy (Rita).   Brother to Doreen Burnham (Bob, late) of Winnipeg. Proud papa of Ryan and Justin and uncle to many relatives in Manitoba.

Bob was the son of the late John Horace Carthew (1971) and Doris Carthew (nee Bridger) (1987).

Born on November 5, 1936 in Winnipeg, Bob initially worked for IBM for over 30 years in multiple locations including the Hudson Valley of New York State, France and Armonk thru the late 1980s.  After leaving IBM, he returned to obtain a Masters Degree in electronic publishing.
Using that skill, he and Linda moved to England where they resided in the Cotswolds for several years before moving back to Westchester County then followed by a 6 year stay in the heart of Muskoka.  Those years away were the best of times for he and Linda.  In his later years, they enjoyed the community of the Village by the Arboretum in Guelph and the Knox Presbyterian Church.

Bob had a decades-long passion for geneology research and published his work.  He loved to travel thoroughout his life to many countries in Europe while living in France, but also to Africa, Florida, Cape Cod, the Caribbean, and California. He also enjoyed tennis, photography, hiking and reading about astronomy to mention a few.
It was at a church in New York that he met Linda and they recently celebrated over 38 years of marriage.

Bob was focused and had a penchant for high detail in everything he did. A void has been left in our family as the ravages of dementia took his presence away from us.  He will be deeply missed.

A private service will be held at the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL by invitation only, due to COVID.  Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park, Guelph.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of LIHN, Guelph General Hospital and Hospice Wellington for his care.
