Hood Peter MM

March 14, 1942 – November 15, 2021

Peter passed away peacefully at Hospice Wellington on Monday, November 15th, 2021, at the age of 79.

Peter was a Brampton boy, born during the war to Donald Hood and Dawn (nee Campbell) Hood. His formative years were spent at St. Andrew’s College and was celebrated for his athleticism in hockey, football, and track & field. He spent his summers at the family cottage in Sunridge sailing, fishing, and hunting, and his experiences in the outdoors would always be an important part of his life.

Peter followed his father and grandfather into the family-owned business, Gummed Papers Ltd and GP Chemical in Brampton. He learned from the ground up by working in the plant with the machines as well as in the sales office and Peter took a strong leadership role in the company until he retired in 2008.

Peter met Susan (nee Parker) of Oakville in 1961 and they were married in 1963.  Together they raised three fun loving, athletic and creative sons – as well as many pets of all shapes and sizes - in the historic Unicorn House in Cheltenham, ON. Their house was often filled with extended children, family and friends, and the family van was always packed when heading to the ski hill, volleyball or on other adventures. Peter was an active parent volunteer with the local swim club and was very involved with the Ontario Volleyball Association in helping to grow the sport in Ontario.

Peter’s love of cooking extended from preparing large family holiday meals to assisting the chief cook at the hunt camp. He was also a camping and white-water canoe enthusiast and for many years participated as an instructor, marathon racer and historical reenactor with the Voyageur Canoe Company of Millbrook, ON. He was happiest when outdoors, whether that was in the hunt camp, sailing in the Caribbean, hitting the slopes or canoeing on the French River, Peter tried to live life to the fullest with the wind at his back and fair weather ahead.

Peter will be missed by many. He is survived by his loving wife Susan; their three boys David (Beth Loch), James and Jeffery (Laura); their four grandchildren Joshua (Samantha), Ink, Mitchell and Sydney; the Hood household was often full of not just the family, but also their chosen family additions which include Linda Kontunin (nee Cairns) and her family (Arthur & Ian), Shabba Simmons and Angela Mullins, Leanne Cook and Jeff Johnstone, nights would be full of laughter and fun for all. He is survived by his three siblings Steven (Susan), Andrew (Barbara) and Mary (Bill) and brother-in-law Timothy (Amanda).

Susan and family would like to thank his medical teams in Kitchener at St Mary’s and Grand River Hospitals, Wyndham Medical, the team at Shoppers Silvercreek, the Ambulatory Care Team & hospital staff at Guelph General, our LHIN support network and the whole team at Hospice Wellington, so many different people worked hard to support his care and treatment plans, and ultimately his passing in a supportive and comfortable environment.

The family will be holding a private gathering for Peter at a future date. Arrangements entrusted to the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL 519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com. If you wish to make a donation in Peter’s memory, the family encourages you to consider Hospice Wellington or The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in lieu of flowers.
