Passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Village of Riverside Glen on Friday, April 5, 2024. In his 82nd year, Michael Lee Hopwood was the beloved father of Jennifer (Chris) Daniels and Amanda (Les) Wright. Michael was the dear brother of Pat Brown and a loving uncle to Meghan Jackson and Kirsten Brown-Firestone. Proud Poppa to his six grandchildren: Silas, Brigid, Toby, Quinn, Eli and Ainsley. He was deeply loved by Phia Hopwood, with whom he shared 26 years of marriage. "Hoppy" will be greatly missed by hockey mates Lynell, Bill, Bob, the Chalkdusters crew, and spouses. Many other nieces, nephews and friends will dearly miss Michael.

Michael was born to Gillie and Ivy on February 17, 1943, and raised in Hamilton. The Halton Board of Education employed Michael for many years as a high school Phys. Ed teacher, coach and Vice Principal, and later, Michael worked as Elementary School Principal with the Brant County Board of Education. Michael loved to play hockey, and at age 17 played with the Hamilton Junior Red Wings at the Hamilton Forum. Michael continued his love for hockey and joined the Chalkdusters in 1982. The Chalkdusters played competitively, and represented Canada at the World Old Timers' Championship in Nice, France. Michael also loved sailing. He placed well in a sailing tournament in the early 1970s in the USA, which was worldwide in scope. Michael then participated in the Olympic trials in 1975 in Kingston and placed well.

Michael, Phia, Jenni and Mandi enjoyed many special trips together and spent time at their family cottage. Michael was an amazing father who provided endless opportunities for us growing up that we will be forever grateful for.

Arrangements entrusted to Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, 1099 Gordon St, Guelph. Private cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Saturday April 20, 2024, from 12:00-1:00pm, with a Celebration of Mike's life to follow at 1:00pm. A livestream link will be available on the funeral home website.
