Surrounded by loved ones, Blaine Francis Hughes (Born January 31, 1964) peacefully passed away at the age of 60 on February 24, 2024 at Guelph General Hospital following a struggle with pneumonia. Beloved by his late father, Dr. Jack Hughes and his late mother Deanna (nee Jones) Hughes. Lovingly remembered by his sister, Ann (Tim) Wilkinson. Proud uncle of Jessica Wilkinson. Predeceased by his younger brother, Dean Hughes. Dearly missed by his companion, Jennie Ferguson. Remembered and loved by his aunt, Shirley Alexander, and his many cousins, friends, and co-workers.

Blaine was an avid fisherman and passionate about camping, boating, canoeing, archery, and the serenity of the great outdoors. The saying, “I would rather be fishing” was written for someone just like him. He would fish in all kinds of weather conditions all over Ontario. Staying in an ice fishing hut for a week would be his kind of winter vacation. He was always game for an adventure out in nature, especially if it included fishing. His interest in both archery and drumming were capped early on when the neighbors complained about arrows landing in and on their deck (luckily no injuries!) and the loud noise of drums waking their napping babies.

Blaine was a member of the Community of Christ Church and enjoyed attending summer camps at their campgrounds. He was a provincial champion water polo player and competitive swimmer for Ontario in his younger years, even mentioned in the local newspaper for breaking swim records. He was a social and friendly person. He enjoyed conversation and made close friends throughout the years. He was an enthusiastic reader. The thicker the book the better. He proudly worked in a factory for many years making quality magnet wire until the company moved from Guelph. In more recent years, he worked for a factory in the security department. His most unique job was feeding fish to the seals at the University of Guelph for the Marine Biology Department. But his all-time favorite job was with a remote fishing resort in Northern Ontario.

Many thanks to the ICU and step-down unit staff of the Guelph General Hospital for their compassion and care.

Blaine is now resting at Gilbert Macintyre and Son Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to attend his burial service at Belsyde Cemetery 1pm on Thursday March 7, 2024.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated toward the Community of Christ Church campgrounds or to the Grand River Conservation Authority or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be left at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com
