Keir Mary MM

With family at her side, Mary passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 5th, 2022, at the long-term care facility of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph in her 90th year.

Predeceased by her parents, Arthur Joseph and Mary Margaret Keir, her brothers Robert and Paul and her husband J. Edward Fuger.  Survived by her brother Peter (Gwen), her son Paul Temple (Cathy), and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

Born August 7, 1932, in Port Colborne, Ontario she left there in her twenties for Montreal to pursue a career as a dental assistant.  In 1968, being a good ten years older than her classmates, Mary graduated with a Degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Toronto School of Dentistry.  In 1974, after many years of night classes, she graduated from Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) in Montreal with a Bachelor of Science degree.  From 1974 to 1997, she taught at John Abbott College, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, QC in the dental hygiene program where she was liked and respected by both her students and colleagues.  In 1974 she married Ed Fuger and they enjoyed many happy years together travelling and at their cottage until his untimely death in 1984. A long-time resident of Saint-Lazare, QC, she was active in church choirs and amateur drama in nearby Hudson and had many friends in the area. A lifelong lover of dogs, she raised and trained Golden Retrievers, and brought them to visit the veterans at Ste. Anne’s Hospital. In 2015, after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, Mary moved back to Ontario to be closer to family.

Many thanks to the compassionate and professional staff of 3 West at St. Joe’s, particularly the nurses and PSW’s who were amazing.
