Laszlo (Leslie) Kovacs –July 31, 1936 – May 10, 2022
Of Guelph, a loving and much-loved husband, father and grandfather. Leslie passed peacefully at home with his family at his side. Stoic, honorable, loyal, truthful, someone you could depend on, just some of the words that automatically come to mind to describe the wonderful man he was. Leslie arrived in Halifax from Hungary in January 1957 as a 21-year-old bachelor in hopes of a better life. He worked across Canada before settling in Red Lake, ON to work in the goldmines in Madsen. In 1966 he relocated to Guelph to work for Fiberglas (now Owens Corning). A few years later, in 1968, he married his wife and together they built a beautiful family life. After 35 years with Owens Corning, he enjoyed a well-deserved retirement and was blessed with good health to enjoy many more years with his wife and family.
Leslie, or Otata as we lovingly called him, will be remembered for many things; the joy he had working on his wristwatch and pendulum clock collection, his love of nature and to take long walks in the forest, or to go on road-trips and to treasure hunt at flea markets with his wife. He will be most remembered however, for his love of family. He was a proud husband, father and grandfather. It gave him great joy to be able to provide others the spoils he himself did not have growing up. He loved everybody and was happiest when the family came together.
Missed terribly by his wife and best friend of 54 years Terez (Galcsik), daughter Elizabeth and her husband Joe (Sabbadin), grandchildren Michael (Sydney), Victoria (Austin). We all wish to thank the extended family and friends who had taken the time to reach out and visit, you know who you are. Special thank you to cousins Margaret and Anita for all your love and support, he looked forward to your visits. Thank you to friend Michelle, you lifted his spirits, made him laugh and he loved that damn otter. All the wonderful PSW’s from Closing the Gap. Much gratitude to Gerry, a true advocate for those in his care. Reshan, your genuine respectfulness and gentleness, Jenny and Mychaela. Catrina Curtis RN, for always being there for us and Dr. Keri Shafir, for your kindness and genuine care. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and his life will be honored by a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers we kindly ask that a donation to Heart and Stroke or Cancer Society be considered, or simply pay some kindness forward.
