LAND, Hugh John

Passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2018.  Born in 1932 in Nassagaweya Township, later moving to Rockwood where he was a scout and an Air Cadet.  Graduate of GCVI in 1949.  In 1952, he worked in Alberta as a linesman helping erect the first rural hydro services in that province.  Returning to Guelph, he was employed by Guelph Hydro.  He married Margaret (Peggy) Beaumont in 1962.  Hugh retired from Guelph Hydro as Construction Supervisor.  In his retirement, he travelled North America and the world.

He was a passionate lover of fishing, minerals, camping and Northern Ontario.  He was still hiking in the bush in his eighties.  He was always willing to share his memories and stories, until Alzheimer’s took them away from him.

Hugh is predeceased by his sister Marie Harris, his wife Peggy and companion of many years Anne Baird.  He is survived by his sister Reta, son Robert and his wife Charlotte, and grandson Abel.

A public graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Block Z on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 10:30 am. A tree will be planted in memory of Hugh J. Land in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest, University of Guelph Arboretum. Dedication service, Sunday, September 15, 2019 at 2:30 pm.
