March 7, 1936 Mount Forest, ON - February 21, 2022 Guelph, ON

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hayes Murphy on Family Day, February 21st, 2022.

Hayes was a true people person and a devoted and dedicated husband, father and grandfather who loved his home filled with fun and laughter. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Judith Murphy (nee Dietrich). Also loved and remembered by his three daughters: Paula and her husband Christopher Murphy-Ives of Toronto, Ontario and their children Alexander (Sacha), Sebastian, Marie Clemence and Emmanuelle.  Colleen and her husband Matthew White of Brighton, England and their children Grace, Felix, Elliot and Tearna and Johanna Murphy and her husband Jake Wilson of Kingston, Ontario and their children Magdalene and Alice. Hayes is also survived by his sister-in-law, Theresa Murphy.

Hayes was the youngest of five children born and raised in Mount Forest. He obtained his BA at The University of Western Ontario and his law degree from Osgoode Hall in 1963. In 1966, after two years of legal practice in Toronto, he came to Guelph and here, enjoyed over 50 years as lawyer, then partner, at McElderry, Morris, Matthews and Murphy on Woolwich Street. Hayes also served on Guelph city council as Alderman for nine years.

Hayes will be remembered for his generosity, humour, plain-speaking and his ability to treat everybody with kindness and respect. He cherished all family time including road trips in the States, visiting his daughters and grandkids all over the world, and the many sunny happy hours spent by the pool after a day's work in the yard of his home, that he loved so much.

Hayes’ family warmly invite you to his Celebration of Life at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, 409 Paisley Road on Saturday February 26th at 12:00pm, followed by a reception at The Country Club, 133 Woodlawn Road E, Guelph. Our deepest thanks to Dr. Tam, and in Guelph, Dr Chaytor and the Bayshore palliative home care team, Dr. Brodovsky and nurses Shannon and Faith, and Care Partners PSWs, who enabled us to grant our dad’s final wish to say his final goodbyes at home.

In lieu of flowers, donations welcome to Grand River Cancer Care or the charity of your choice are greatly appreciated.
