PENNOCK, Paul W.

Pennock Paul MM

Dr. Paul W. Pennock, aged 91, passed away June 10th at Guelph General Hospital following a short illness.

As a kid from rural New Hampshire, Paul developed a passion and concern for animals that brought him to Guelph to study at the Ontario Veterinary College in 1952.  This started his 40 + year relationship with OVC, first as a student, then as a veterinarian and eventually as a veterinary radiologist and professor.

Although he worked and studied in several countries, and travelled to many, Paul always called Guelph home and contributed much to the community.  He was an active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the Guelph Rotary Club, and The Men’s Club.

While studying at OVC, Paul met Anne West. They married in 1958 and celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last December.  Together they built a loving family, and Paul is survived by his wife Anne, children Deborah (Salvador Medina) and David (Sonia Bebbington) and grandchildren Owen, Mateo, Jacob and Bronwen.

Paul is universally described as being smart, caring, considerate and an all-round nice guy.  He was laid back and quiet, with a quirky sense of humour.  He used language for fun and continually adopted new words and expressions; he got his “ears lowered” every six weeks. Paul was extremely modest about his many accomplishments and talents - he was an academic, a practicing vet, a carpenter, a tinkerer and a cook! His head was absolutely full of knowledge and there was nothing like watching him sit back, with a “Now let me think,” and slowly but surely come up with the answer to a question.

Paul was a leader by example and his being here made the world a better place.  He will be sorely missed.

Visitation and service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (161 Norfolk Street, Guelph) on Thursday, June 16th.  Visitation from 1 – 2 pm, followed by a memorial service at 2 pm. Refreshments to be served afterwards.
