Cav. Imelda Porcellato (nee Gazzola) passed away peacefully with family by her side at St. Joseph’s Health Centre (Guelph) on December 21, 2021, in her 82nd year. Imelda was the loving wife and soulmate to Francesco for 61 years, the proud mother to Lorna and Christina (David Murphy), and adoring nonna to Anya, Ben, Isabella and Francesca.

Imelda will be greatly missed by her beloved sisters and best friends Giuliana, Luciana (Armando Maggiotto) and Valeria (Valeriano Porcellato, also an in-law by marriage), and cherished in-laws Ines Gazzola (late Romano), Emma Porcellato (late Bruno), Saverio Porcellato (late Irene) and Gemma Baggio (late Bruno). She was predeceased by in-laws Achille Porcellato (late Onorina), Ida Michelin (late Nini), and Umberto Porcellato (late Meris). She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as great friends and neighbours.

Imelda was born in Loria (Treviso, Veneto) to Carolina and Benedetto and immigrated to Guelph in 1950 with her family. Over the course of her life, Imelda touched the hearts of many. Throughout her nearly 40 years of community service, Imelda became a champion of people. With boundless energy and a warm and generous spirit, she dedicated herself to cultivating the potential of others. Imelda enriched countless lives across many communities – her family, her friends, the Italian seniors’ group she co-founded and facilitated for decades, and all Italian-Canadians of Guelph and surrounding communities as Italian Vice Consul for Guelph, Waterloo and Wellington for 23 years. For her achievements, Imelda was recognized with numerous awards and accolades, but it was simply the joy of others that truly motivated her.

Imelda passed away after a courageous decade-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She faced this challenge with grace, optimism and resilience, and never lost her unforgettable smile.

We are grateful for the kindness, compassion and dedication of the countless health care providers who cared for Imelda during the past 10 years.
