Reed Charles MM

Of Guelph, Ontario passed away at Riverside Glen on March 24, 2018 at the age of 95. He was predeceased by his parents Ed and Mary Reed of Larder Lake, his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Margaret Marsh, his infant son Raymond Charles Reed, and his younger brother Robert Reed of St. Catharines. He will be missed by his brother James Reed of Kenogami, Ontario and his sisters Ruth and Jean Reed of Larder Lake, Ontario.

He leaves behind his daughters Patricia (Steve) Kempf of Guelph and Susan (David) Giffen of Saskatoon.  He will be greatly missed by his 9 grandchildren and their spouses, his 7 great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.

Charlie was stationed in Wales during WW2 and trained as a flight engineer.  After returning to Canada he studied medicine at the University of Toronto and graduated in 1952. He practiced family medicine for almost 60 years, first in Matachewan, Ontario and Malartic, Quebec and then in Guelph.

He will be remembered for being an old fashioned family doctor who made house calls at any time of day or night and who made his patients feel secure and cared for.  He was generous to a fault and helped many people who were in financial difficulty. He was an avid collector and loved to spend his Saturday mornings attending garage sales looking for special “treasures”.

The biggest challenge Charlie ever faced in life was caring for his beloved wife Betty as she was slowly taken away from him by Alzheimer’s disease over a period of 15 years. As her memory faded he sorely missed the wisdom and support that she had always given him during their marriage.

A private family memorial service has already been held and internment has taken place.

Condolences may be left online at the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 519-822-0051
