SLOOPKA, Lena Marie (nee Fontinato)

It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Lena Sloopka on Monday, May 22, 2023, at Hospice Wellington after a brief illness with pancreatic and liver cancer.

Born in 1929, Lena was in her 94th year. Her loving husband, Stanley Edward Sloopka, predeceased Lena in 2010. Lena will be remembered and missed by her sons, Michael, David, and Mark; her daughters-in-law, Barbara Sloopka (nee Bresolin) and Jennie Dang and her adult grandsons, Kyle, Matthew, Ryan, and Evan, and Nisha Lao.

Lena was predeceased by her two daughters-in-law, Judy Sloopka (nee Taylor) and Julie Sloopka (nee Bradshaw), her sisters Rita Alexander, Celestine Lane, Molly Molinaro, her brother Louis Fontinato, and her parents, Liberale and Maria Fontinato. Lena is survived by her eldest sister Carmel King, who recently celebrated her 102nd birthday.

At age seventeen, Lena started her career in hairdressing, and she operated a successful hairdressing business in Guelph for over 65 years. She appreciated her valued long-time employees (Gloria, Jean, and Linda) and enjoyed serving many clients throughout her business operations.

Cremation has taken place. Visitations for family and friends will be had at the Gilchrist Chapel - McIntyre and Wilkie Funeral Home, One Delhi Street (at Eramosa Road), Guelph, on Tuesday, May 30, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

At approximately 10:45 a.m., there will be a brief Eulogy. Immediately following the Eulogy, family and friends will proceed for the Interment at Our Lady Immaculate Mausoleum, Marymount Cemetery, Highway 6 North in Guelph.

There will not be any religious services at the funeral home or during the Interment at the Mausoleum. No COVID protocols are in place, and wearing face masks is not required.

Following the Interment, Lena’s life will be celebrated with a reception at noon in the Isabelle White Room at Cutten Fields Golf Club, 190 College Avenue, Guelph.

As expressions of sympathy, instead of flowers, donations in memory of Lena Sloopka can be made to Hospice Wellington, 795 Scottsdale Drive, Guelph, Ontario, N1G 3R8.

The Sloopka family would like to thank the management, staff, and residents of the Ellridge apartment at the Elliott Community for creating an excellent independent living environment for seniors.

The family would also like to thank the Board of Directors, management, palliative care doctors, nursing staff, music, massage, and touch therapists, personal care support workers, and volunteers of Hospice Wellington for their professional, compassionate, and dedicated care.

The family would also like to thank the various corporations, charitable foundations, families, and individuals who have donated funds to support Hospice Wellington.
