Died November 11, 2020, 94 years old. Loving mother of Russell Speers (Carolyn Pletsch) and Derek Speers (Barb Clark).
Grandmother of Alexandra, Emma and Jacob Speers and great grandmother of Dorothy Speers. Phyllis was married to Jim Speers until his passing in 1992. Phyllis died at the age of 94. She was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, the sister of Horace Borthwick.
She spent her early adulthood in nursing school and then nursing in Montreal and Toronto until the birth of her first child. The family lived in Downsview, a suburb of Toronto, until the boys left home and Phyllis and Jim relocated to Guelph. Although a dedicated mother she loved to travel, beginning her journeys as a young wife accompanying Jim (a camp bookkeeper) to logging camps across Western Canada. In her later years she visited the UK, Alaska, France several times, Spain, Portugal, Arizona, New York City, Mexico, Montreal, and St. John’s, among others.
She had a great sense of humour and keen interest in politics. She would never miss TVO and her biggest fear this year, pandemic aside, was that Trump would spend another term in office. We were at least able to set her mind at ease about that before she passed! We could not set her mind at rest about the pandemic.
Phyllis made everyone feel important and interesting. She had many friends and interests in the community including Three Willows United Church. She will be missed very much by both friends and family.
