Of Guelph, passed away on March 31st, 2023 after a long battle with cancer at the age of 81.
Joe was born on July 5th,1941 to the late Anthony and Maria Sponga in Azzano Decimo, Italy. At the age of 15 he moved to Guelph and started his career in painting. In 1962, Joe met Barb (Bennett) and were married in 1965.
Joe and Barb went on to have two children Susan and Michael. In 2002 he retired from the Homewood and enjoyed his time at the racetrack, gardening, his salami, cheese and wine.
Survived by his wife Barb and his children Susan and Michael. Loving grandfather to Dale (Catrina) and Leah (Joe). Dear great grandfather to his beautiful cherished great granddaughter Paighton. Brother of Rosina, Elsa, Rita (deceased), Liliana, Angelo and Maria.
Joe will be remembered by his large loving extended family, friends and racing community.

The family would like to thank the oncology department at GRCC and GGH, the amazing nursing team at Bayshore Home Health as well as Dr. Ruddock.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.
A tree will be planted in memory of Joe (Giuseppe) Sponga in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
