Morris Twist passed away peacefully at the Guelph General Hospital on Friday, August 14, 2020 at the age of 78 years, surrounded by his wife and son, after a short battle with cancer.
Morris was the beloved husband of Annette Twist (née Brown) for 51 years, a loving father to James and Padraig, his daughter-in-law Claudia, and the cherished grandfather of Julian and Samuel.
Born in Ireland, Morris immigrated to Canada in 1960 at the age of 18 and soon became a buyer for the T. Eaton Company. After earning a Masters of Social Work at Wilfred Laurier University, Morris became the Executive Director of the Guelph United Way, a position he held for 35 years. He was a prolific volunteer in the Guelph community, holding various positions
with a range of organizations, including as board member with Wyndham House, a member of the Legal Aid Appeal Committee, a member of the steering committee of the Guelph Community Foundation, community volunteer on the City of Guelph's allocations committee, an intake worker at Sister Christine's Drop-In-Centre and a case volunteer with terminally ill
patients at Hospice, among many others activities.
Morris had many passions and hobbies. He became a skilled wood worker, making custom boxes for many of his friends and family. He loved roses, and together with Annette, they created a beautiful garden in the backyard of their Exhibition Park home, where they have lived for over 48 years. He was passionate, kind, generous, had an unrestrained sense of humour, and made lasting connections with so many people in the Guelph community.
Cremation has taken place. If so desired, memorial donations to The United Way would be appreciated by the family.
