Ed was no stranger to a good laugh and a nice glass of wine. He was a man of many words who lit up a room with his big personality and easy way with people.
Ed was born in Amsterdam on December 9, 1940 and came to Canada in 1958. With a hustle and drive he learned English and made his way through his early years in Canada when his family decided to return to the Netherlands. When asked all the things he knew how to do he could list an endless amount of jobs and skills he picked up along the way and was always quick to give a neighbor or a friend a hand with a project. A skilled carpenter, a longtime resident of Eden Mills, was an avid cyclist and loved to travel. He often shared memories of his youth in the merchant marines and he could still tie a good sailor’s knot 60 years later. Dutch had a real love of music and could be found out on the dance floor tearing it up till the end of the night.
Ed passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 17, 2022 at the age of 81 years in Ottawa. He was loved by many including his wife of 50 years, Pauline, his children Tracy (Daniel) and Jason (Anita), and his grandchildren Joaquin and Mateo. A celebration of his life will be planned in the coming months.
