Wismer John MM

On December 13, 2021, we said a goodbye to a great Guelph man. John Wismer passed away peacefully and content after 86 years of living life to its fullest. A caring and loved husband and partner of 66 years to Sally (nee Monteith).  Older brother to Stephen (Anna) and David (Dee). Father (or simply “Dad”) to Martha (Geoff) and Markham (Jennifer).  He was a proud “Papa John” to grandchildren Emily, Laurel, Gabriel, Jeremy, and Hudson, with frequent visits to Burnaby and local Guelph pickups and drop-offs. These were always an opportunity for him learn about and stay updated on the kids’ school, work, and activities.

John grew up in London, Ontario.  After his elementary years at a two-classroom public school in rural London, he attended Medway High School and went on to graduate from the University of Toronto with a Masters of Social Work.  John and Sally married in 1960 before moving to Guelph where they settled in, raised their kids, and John began his 19-year-career with the Children’s Aid Society.  Following retirement, John became active in and passionate about many aspects of his community. These included bird watching, support of neighbourhood and community organizations, an ongoing hunt for a “cheap deal,” enjoying the family cabin at Livingstone Lake, a devotion to finances and investments, researching family genealogy and history, and a love of music – especially jazz and classical. John and Sally traveled and explored the world together – learning about history, art, culture, and food along the way.

John was a dear and loyal friend, co-worker, and “buddy” to so many. He stayed in touch with the childhood “Medway Gang,” organized bird watching trips to Point Pelee, established regular lunch “dates,” and couldn’t resist a good air show or car show.  John was a caring person remembered by many who loved his smile and shared his wit, generosity and fun energy.
