Passed away peacefully at Guelph General Hospital on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at the age of 95 years. Dear father of Hilary (Simon) Capstick of Tallahassee, Florida.  Proud grandfather of Liam and Moira.  Predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane “May” (Stewart) Wright, his son David, and his sisters, Margaret Pettit and Annie McCoo.  Samuel is survived by his sister, Emily Convery of Wales.

Samuel will also be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews in Canada and the UK including Betty Jones, John Ross and Betty and Doyle Langford and their families and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Samuel served in the Royal Navy during WWII.   In fact, he was a “boy sailor” at 14.  Before he turned 18, he had served on ships which escorted the supply ships in the North Atlantic (Arctic Convoys).  In May of 1941, he was serving on HMS Norfolk which was involved in the sinking of the Bismarck.  He spent the second half of the war in the Pacific Theatre and in 1956, he was sent to Egypt during the Suez Crisis.  He retired from the Royal Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1963.  He then was a police officer for a number of years in the UK and Canada.  Samuel was a Correctional Officer at the Guelph Correctional Centre from 1970 until retirement in 1988.

At Samuel’s request, there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place.
