What started as a consensual fight at a downtown bar ended with one of the participants later being lured away and attacked by a group of males, two of whom held baseball bats.

Police were called to a bar disturbance shortly before midnight last Thursday and, after determining the fight to be consensual, sent the people involved on their way.

About four hours later, a news release explains, the girlfriend of one of the fighters called police from Guelph General Hospital. She explained that after officers broke up the fight, she received a text message from one of the other males involved claiming he wanted to meet up with her boyfriend to discuss the situation.

The couple took an Uber to the agreed upon location, on Scottsdale Drive. When they arrived, they were reportedly met by several males, two of which held baseball bats.

At that point, the release explains, the male who sent the text attacked the woman’s boyfriend, punching him in the face and throwing him to the ground, where he struck his head. He was then repeatedly punched and stomped on by some of the other males.

The victim sustained a concussion, along with several cuts and bruises.

Investigators identified one suspect in the attack and, on Friday evening, arrested a 21-year-old Ajax man. He’s charged with assault causing bodily harm.

Police continue efforts to identify the other involved males.
