A Guelph teen who falsely posted on X that she was being abused – prompting an investigation involving police in two provinces – has been warned she could face criminal charges.

Saturday afternoon, Guelph police received information from a police service in Quebec. That service had received a call from someone in the US over concerning posts on the social media platform X. The posts were traced to an address in Guelph.

Officers attended an address in the city’s west end to check everyone’s wellbeing. They spoke to a 15-year-old female who initially lied before admitting she made up the abuse story for ‘clout’ and had since deleted the X account where it was posted.

The girl was warned in the presence of her parents such behaviour could result in a criminal charge of public mischief.
