Robbery charge laid after thief gets physical with store clerk

A Guelph man faces a robbery charge after a convenience store clerk was assaulted and had product stolen Monday, report Guelph police.

Approximately 7:40 a.m. police were called to a business near Gordon Street and Wellington Street East. A man had asked for cigarettes before attempting to go around the counter to the employee area.

When the female clerk tried to stop him, the male shoved her and snatched the cigarettes from her hand. The clerk was not physically injured.

Officers responded minutes later and located the male nearby holding the stolen cigarettes. A 29-year-old Guelph man is charged with robbery and breaching probation. He was held for a bail hearing.
