Puslinch’s Tristan Jankovics is heading to his first Olympic Games this summer.
The 20-year-old swimmer qualified for Paris during the Canadian Olympic Swim Trials meet in Toronto yesterday and will compete in the men’s 400 metre individual medley. But more could be in store for the Centennial CVI graduate.
He won the 400 metre medley Tuesday night with a time of 4:11.74, just under the qualifying time.
“It’s going to be my childhood dream to be there,” he told Swimming Canada after the race.
“I just want to enjoy it, do my best, and represent this country to the fullest.”
While he was born in Guelph, Jankovics grew up in Puslinch but still commutes to swim with Royal City Aquatics.
He just wrapped up his second year with Ohio State University, where he was named a first-team All-American in the 800 metre freestyle relay and 400 metre individual medley.
Jankovics isn't done just yet this week.
He competed in the 200 metre freestyle Wednesday morning, and qualified for the A-final this evening after posting a time of 1:49.53 in the prelims. The top four qualify for consideration into the 4x200 metre freestyle relay team.
On Friday, he’s scheduled to compete in the 200 metre backstroke event.
On Saturday, he’ll dive into the 200 metre individual medley.
In order to qualify for the Olympics in the individual events, Jankovics would need to place first or second and make the Olympic qualifying time.
