Guelph is set to welcome some of Ontario's best disc golfers this weekend.

The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) will hold the Diameter Open at both the Eastview Disc Golf Course and Victoria Park Valley Golf Club Saturday and Sunday.

"We recently got two 18-hole courses installed last year in Guelph," said assistant tournament director Ryan 'Bevy' Bevilacqua, adding the infrastructure was crucial to qualify the city for a PDGA event.

"We're thankful for everything the city and Vic Park valley have done to help make that happen."

The Diameter Open is a two-day B-tier event, the most prestigious disc golf event Guelph has ever hosted according to Bevilacqua. He said the goal is to make it an annual event.

"We wanted to kind of just get out feet wet with an event of this calibre," he said, noting he would like to one day get an A-tier event to Guelph.

Nearly 150 players will compete in three rounds, and in 13 divisions based on age and skill level, including a couple professional divisions.

The vast majority of players registered are from Ontario, but a player from the United States will also take part.

Two rounds will take place at Eastview, while one round happens at Victoria Park.

But there will be action at both locations throughout the day. There will be two pools of players competing, one at Eastview, the other at Victoria Park. The pools will switch to the opposite course the next day.

Both days begin at 9 a.m. and the tournament is expected to run through the day.

Bevilacqua said anyone wanting to spectate can head down and watch for free.
