The passing of the torch in an automotive shop is usually related to some kind of welding repair service. When it comes to Dettmer Tire and Auto Service, the recent passing of the torch is really about the legacy of one of the company’s most revered and respected staff members.

After serving more than 40 years as the driving force at Dettmer Tire, long-time owner Bill Adams has decided to hand over the reigns of the business to the next generation of Adams’ family members. It marks the end of a very successful run managing the well-known Guelph automotive service business.

“He’s in his 80s now, so it’s time to enjoy some down time,” said current partner Josh Adams, who along with his aunts Kelly and Kathy and his father Mike will continue to operate the family-owned business.

“Bill was always very engaged with his employees and cared very deeply about their wellbeing. He never wanted to see someone out of work. He was very focused on making sure everyone could continue to work and provide for their family. We are very fortunate to have learned from him and hope to continue providing the same level of customer service he provided”

As someone born and raised in Guelph, Bill’s path to becoming a local automotive service mogul was unique. After graduating from John F. Ross in 1961, Bill got his first job as a bank teller at CIBC in downtown Guelph. In 1964 Bill started working as an accountant at Dominion Rubber, which would later become Uniroyal Tires. In 1975, Bill made the transition to Dettmer Tire in Kitchener, where he was hired by former owner Wilf Dettmer.

After three years of service, Bill purchased the Dettmer Tire location at Cork Street in September 1978. Since that time, Bill has taken part in every role in the business, from high level decisions to janitorial work. In the 40 years that Bill has owned Dettmer Tire he has grown it from a single location into two service centres along with two tire warehouses and a spin off automotive parts store.

“Bill’s favourite part of the job is working closely with staff including family members, which now span three generations,” said Josh. “Bill’s deeply personal involvement in the business is one of the reasons why over 40 percent of the staff has worked for Dettmer for 15 years or more.”

“Bill loved talking to customers and making sure that Dettmer Tire was able to meet their need, often staying late to help someone out of a bind.” Adams says. “We are very proud of the legacy he created and humbled that he has entrusted us to carry if forward”

As for the future, Dettmer Tire is in good hands, with the currently partner group continuing the legacy of great service to Guelph and surrounding area. With spring weather, it’s time to come in for tire swaps and maintenance checkups.
